Flying in 2026: What the Global Air Travel Slowdown Means for Your Next Trip
Welcome to Manley Global Travel. On launch day, we want to start with something useful: a plain-English look at what is happening in air travel right now, and how to book smarter because of it.
Air travel is still growing, just more slowly
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) expects global passenger traffic to grow by only 2.1% in 2026, a slower pace than recent years. Growth is uneven. Asia Pacific is forecast to grow 5.1% and account for more than half of the global gain, while North America is expected to grow just 0.8% and the Middle East to shrink by 11.4%.
The latest monthly data we reviewed points the same way. In June 2026, global passenger demand fell 1.7% compared with June 2025, and international demand was down 0.9%. Excluding the Middle East, international demand actually rose 1.1%.
Why demand is softer
IATA points to three pressures:
- Conflict in the Middle East. Airspace limits and hostilities have cut transfer traffic through the region, and Middle East carriers' international traffic fell 14% in June.
- Higher fuel prices. IATA links rising fuel costs to some Asia Pacific airlines trimming short-haul routes.
- A weaker economy. Global growth is forecast to slow to around 2.5%, and inflation reduces how much households can spend on travel.
What it means for you
When demand slows in one corridor, airlines shift capacity and prices move. These habits help in any market:
- Compare more than one route. If a popular connection through the Middle East is disrupted, alternatives through Asia or Europe can cost less or take less time.
- Check the whole journey, not just the fare. Layover length, baggage rules and change fees affect the real cost.
- Be flexible by a day or two. Shifting your dates often changes the price more than anything else.
- Read fare rules before you pay. Conditions differ between airlines and ticket types.
- Sort your visa early. A cheap ticket is no use if your paperwork is not ready.
